April Ross

April Ross is only one of the few beach volleyball players who have earned medals at least twice in an Olympics. In Tokyo over the next several days, she'll be aiming to net her third medal along with first-time Olympian Alix Klineman. Ross will also be hoping for her first Olympic gold. And at the age of 39 this may be her last opportunity to achieve it. But she's confident top awards can be achieved. If we do our top or play well I feel like we can get that gold medal Ross stated on NBC Boston. It's also going to be an issue of luck. Ross was born in 1982, and grew up within Costa Mesa California with her mother and sister, first began competing in the sports of Newport Harbor High school. Ross competed in many activities while at Newport Harbor High School. As a prep-athlete she played indoor volleyball and track. But she clearly was superior to the rest when it came to the second sport. When she played in her time at the high school level in her university bio, she was an outside-hitter, middle blocker and setter. To honor her achievements, she received the Gatorade Award for the National Player of 1999. Additionally, in 2000, she was named Orange County Athlete of the Yr for volleyball. While Ross Klineman and Ross are a couple since 2017, the former was already a big-time participant on the beaches long before their pairing. She has won major competitions with different players. The other is an iconic player in the world of volleyball. For six years from 2007 until 2013, she was a team alongside Jennifer Kessy who more recently played the role of Klineman's coach. Kessy and Ross were strong on the international circuit, winning the 2009 World Championship together. They went through to take home a silver medal at the 2012 Olympic Games at London. They were beaten out for the gold by the legendary group comprised of Misty May-Treanor as well as Kerri Walsh (Jennings). Ross Jennings took over for May-Treanor after she retired. They both won bronze medals in beach volleyball for the Rio Olympics in 2016. After high school and many years before hitting the beach as a professional Ross was a ball with the Trojans of USC as an NCAA. The Trojans had a great performance for Ross during her time at the school. As a freshmen in 2000 the Trojans' performance earned her the Pac-10 as well as NCAA Freshman-of-the-Year honors. The Trojans had the chance to get to the Final Four with her help. She endured a great personal loss in her sophomore, but was still capable of achieving the All-American distinction. Over her final 2 years in the Trojans program, she coached the Trojans to winning a national title each year. Individually she had cemented her place as a legend by winning the 2003-2004 Honda Sports Award as the most outstanding female college volleyball player. Ross studied international relations at USC. Unfortunately Ross mom Margie was not able to witness Ross rise to the top levels of beach volleyball fame. Margie, Ross's mother, passed away in 2001. Ross was still an USC sophomore. Her breast cancer had been diagnosed. This meant that Ross continues to be near to her mother who passed away. Margie has always been a source of inspiration for her on and off the beach.
